Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, born on November 7, 1989 in Norilsk, Russia, is a Russian conceptual artist and political activist. She is best known for being a member of the Anarchist Feminist group Pussy Riot as well as the street art group Voina. Her most famous performance was at the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior where she and other members of the group held a “Punk Prayer” leading to their arrest.
Prior to her activism, Nadezhda pursued her interest in literature and art by enrolling in the philosophy department at Moscow State University. While incarcerated, she wrote letters and took part in hunger strikes to protest against corruption within the system.
She received recognition for her efforts, co-winning the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought in 2014 and appearing in a documentary film about her Punk Prayer performance which premiered at Sundance in 2013.
In addition to her activism work, Nadezhda married Pyotr Verzilov – another accomplished artist known for storming the field during the 2018 World Cup final – with whom she has a daughter named Gera born in 2008.
