About Aphra Behn
Aphra Behn was an influential playwright and author of the Restoration Era, born on December 14, 1640 in England. Known for plays such as The Rover, Sir Patient Fancy, and The Feigned Courtesans, she also wrote novels including Oroonoko and Love-Letters Between a Nobleman and His Sister.
Before achieving fame through her literary works, Behn traveled to various places including Venezuela and Africa. She published her first dramatic work, The Forced Marriage, in 1670.
Behn also had a unique stint as a political spy for the English Government. Born near Canterbury, England, her marriage to Johan Behn was tragically cut short by his early death.
