About Coretta Scott King
Coretta Scott King was a prominent civil rights activist born on April 27, 1927 in Heiberger, Alabama. Following the assassination of her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., she became a key figure in the fight for racial equality and also advocated for women’s rights and LGBT rights.
Prior to gaining recognition for her activism, she graduated as valedictorian from Lincoln Normal School and stood out as the first black person in her neighborhood to own a truck. After her passing, she was honored by becoming the first African-American to lie in state at the Georgia State Capitol.
In 1953, Coretta married Martin Luther King Jr., with whom she had four children: Bernice, Yolanda, Dexter and Martin III.
