Ann Lee (1736-02-29 – ), known to her followers as “Mother Ann,” was a prominent English-born religious leader who led a group of Shakers in New York during the late 18th century. The Shakers, formally known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, were devoted to celibacy and worship that involved dancing or “shaking.” In the late 1750s, Lee encountered Shaker ideals through joining a related religious sect founded by James and Jane Wardley. In 1774, she relocated to the United States where she attracted devoted followers and established a Shaker community. Despite being born into a Quaker family in Manchester, England, Lee was forced into marriage against her aversion to intimate relations – an attitude supported by her Shaker faith. She gave birth to four children, all of whom died in infancy.
