About Catherine Of Aragon
Catherine of Aragon, born on December 16, 1485, in Spain, is best remembered as the first wife of King Henry VIII and held the title of Queen of England from 1509 until the annulment of her marriage to the king in 1533. The couple had five children, but only one surviving daughter: Mary I (“Bloody Mary”), who later ruled England.
Before becoming queen consort, Catherine and Henry were crowned at Westminster Abbey in June of 1509. She voiced her opposition to Henry’s infatuation with her lady-in-waiting, Anne Boleyn and believed herself to be his only legitimate wife.
Born into Spanish royalty as the daughter of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, Catherine was initially married to Prince Arthur at an early age. Following Arthur’s death almost a decade later she eventually wed King Henry VIII in 1509.
