About Cynthia Rylant
Cynthia Rylant is an American children’s author who was born on June 6, 1954, in Hopewell, West Virginia. She is best known for her book “Missing May,” which won the Newbery Medal in 1993. Rylant has also written other acclaimed children’s books such as “A Fine White Dust,” “I Had Seen Castles,” and the Cobblestreet Cousins and Annie & Snowball series.
Rylant’s debut work, “When I Was Young in the Mountains” (1982), depicts her childhood in the Appalachian region of West Virginia. She earned degrees from Morris Harvey College and Marshall University before pursuing a career as a writer.
Her novel “A Fine White Dust” was recognized as a Newbery Honor winner in 1987. Rylant was raised by her grandparents after her parents divorced when she was four years old. She later married a University of Akron professor and had a son named Nathaniel.
