About Emily Carr
Emily Carr, born on December 13, 1871 in Victoria, Canada, was a Canadian author and painter known for her “Blunden Harbour” works. Her art was heavily influenced by the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Carr drew inspiration from post-impressionists and fauvists while living in France.
Before gaining recognition as an artist, Carr attended the San Francisco Art Institute and the Westminster School of Art. However, her teaching career at the Ladies Art Club in Vancouver ended after only a month due to her unorthodox behavior – smoking and using profanity with students leading to their boycott of her classes.
Carr’s most renowned paintings were created later in life during her late 50s. She was born into a large family with nine siblings who adhered closely to British customs and traditions. Raised Presbyterian, she struggled with giving weekly sermons to her family growing up.
