Ma Rainey, born on April 26, 1886 in Columbus, Georgia, was a pioneering blues singer known as the Mother of the Blues. She was one of the first performers to incorporate folk blues into her music and she recorded over one hundred songs during her career, with “See See Rider” being among her most notable works.
Her early career began at the Springer Opera House and she later toured across the American South performing in tent shows and cabarets alongside her husband William Rainey. Renowned for their simplicity and lack of embellishment, Ma Rainey’s performances often depicted the hardships experienced by African Americans.
