About Sandra Schmirler
Sandra Schmirler was a Canadian curler born on June 11, 1963. Known as “Schmirler the Curler”, she had a successful career, winning three World Curling Championships and leading the Canadian national team to an Olympic gold medal in 1998, when women’s curling was first included in the Winter Olympics. She later became a respected commentator for CBC Sports.
Before gaining fame in the curling world, she was born and raised in Biggar, Saskatchewan and participated in other sports such as volleyball, badminton, and softball. Despite her achievements on ice being notable by themselves; tragically losing her battle with cancer at age 36 only further solidified her legacy within Canada where she is remembered affectionately to this day among both fans of winter sports and even those who admired her personal strength when facing adversity.
She left behind her husband Shannon and two daughters Sara and Jenna.
